Amidst all the excitement surrounding Jamie xx's new album In Colour, we had almost forgotten that The xx-member-turned-star-producer was scoring a ballet. Tree of Codes is set to debut at the Manchester International Festival on July 2, and it has been previewed with a new trailer.
The clip doesn't shed much light on the tone of the performance, since there's no dancing, just shots of what appears to be the stage design. In the background, we hear a tinkling piano piece called "Pianna" by Jamie xx. The song sounds like fairly traditional ballet music, and is a big departure from his usual electronic beats.
Tree of Codes is inspired by the book of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer. It was directed and choreographed by Wayne McGregor, while Olafur Eliasson handled the visual concept.
Check out the trailer below. Thanks to Pitchfork for the tip.
