Canada has no shortage of über talented female singer-songwriters, and with Water Will Flow, her fourth album, Jane Ehrhardt makes a case for joining the ranks of the best of the bunch. The 11 tracks on this record combine folk, alt-country and roots genres in a self-confident, home-for-a-rest style.
The Moncton, New Brunswick singer's voice is like a warm sweater and her band — Hugo LeMalt on guitars, Gregoire Dufour on bass and Renaud Pilote on drums — sound like they've been playing together their entire lives. Timely use of the accordion, piano, lap steel, mandolin and harmonica elevate stand-out tracks "The Flood," "These Arms" and the sing-along "Last One to Leave the Party," while "Life is But a Care" seems dark, rough around the edges and out of place on this particular record.
Produced by Simon Paradis and released on Quebec's new indie label La Palette, the songs here, which include one bilingual track ("Mille Souvenirs"), bridge the musical gap between Eastern Canada and Quebec.
