Jared Leto is about to expand his role in the booming superhero film universe, but this time he'll be teaming up with Marvel to play Morbius in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spinoff.

Much like the upcoming Venom, the film will simply be called Morbius and based on the Spider-Man baddie of the same name. As Variety reports, Safe House director Daniel Espinosa will helm the project.

The film is being written by the team of Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who recently worked on Netflix's Lost in Space series.

For the unfamiliar, Morbius was created in 1971 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, with the character first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #101. The character was a scientist who tried to cure himself of a blood disease, and is so often the case, things didn't exactly go as planned, resulting in the vampire-like Morbius villain and Spider-Man rival.

So far, Sony has not cemented a firm premiere date for Morbius, but the movie is expected to start production later this year. It will follow both Venom in October and Spider-Man: Far from Home, which is to premiere next year.

Of course, Leto is also set to reprise his Suicide Squad role as the Joker in an upcoming origin story film.
