Jason Collett Reveals Joseph Boyden, A Tribe Called Red as Basement Revue Guests

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Dec 8, 2014

Jason Collett's annual Basement Revue has become a holiday-time staple in the Toronto music community. And for the seven years it's been running, the Broken Social Scenester has curated shows with special guests and top-secret lineups. However, he's now breaking that rule.

Collett has unveiled the roster for the December 18 instalment of the Basement Revue, and it features Joseph Boyden, A Tribe Called Red, Jennifer Castle, Lee Maracle and Naomi Klein. Rounding out the night's performers and presenters are Leanne Simpson, Tara Williamson, Shary Boyle, Emily Vey Duke and Cris Derksen, with a few more special guests to come.

The show will now take place at the Opera House (following a fire at the previously booked Adelaide Music Hall) and the larger venue space marks a conscious decision to draw out as many attendees as possible to support an important cause — support for missing and murdered aboriginal women.

A statement from organizers Collett and Damian Rogers reads:

Back in September, we reached out to Joseph Boyden and A Tribe Called Red to co-curate this show with us. The generous and enthusiastic spirit in which they responded was inspiring, and our conversations quickly snowballed, resulting in this incredibly talented roster.

In light of the tumultuous fall we've had, with issues of violence against women coming to a historical head, this is a poignant moment for us all to reflect. The pieces that will be performed at this show are an artistic articulation of the many threads that run through this theme.

This show is a celebration of resilience, resistance, and survival. We hope you'll join us.

Tickets for the updated event are available here. The remaining December revue lineups remain unannounced and will take place at the Dakota Tavern on December 9, 23 and 30.
