Who are you?
Hey there. This is Jason Noble.
What are you up to?
I play in the bands Shipping News and Rachel's. Rachel's just returned from a short tour in the states with friends Matmos. Shipping News is preparing for a longish tour in early 2001 to coincide with the release of our second record. Wrapping up a recording project under the name "Per Mission" for the Monitor record label in Baltimore. Otherwise - just trying to keep sane - fight the good fight - not be a grump all the time.
Hometown and current HQ:
Louisville, KY
Current fixations:
Alan Lightman - "Einstein's Dreams," Jeff Mueller and Kerri Sancomb's bad ass scones, Radiohead "Kid A", Outkast, Creation Rebel "Starship Africa," ReBirth Drum Machine simulator... finally saw "Buena Vista Social Club" - so excellent.
Mind altering work of art:
Squallis Puppeteers - "The Crowning" - the only stage show I've seen lately with live funk, a rapping placenta, 8 foot tall metallic midwives and an amazing combination of drama/humour. This happened here in Louisville, about a week ago.
Most memorable/inspirational gig and why?
Kinghorse (summer 1989)- Also, Slint - summer 1987 - at the exceptionally small venue Café Dog in Louisville. Just mind-blowing. No stage, everyone close together. LOUD and Feral. Then, Distorted and SAD. Phillip Glass ensemble - Spring 1986 - These shows changed my thinking about music forever. I have to include the first listening to Art of Noise "Close to the Edit" - and the RUN DMC - "Raising Hell" tape as played on jambox. I know this doesn't exact qualify as a gig - but
What should everyone shut up about?
The discussion regarding -"Is rock music dead?" - in any form - spoken or written.
Your greatest strength/weakness:
Open mindedness is both. It leads to consideration of too many sides of an idea. Which can lead to paralysis of spirit if you don't make a solid decision and face it. A juicy contradiction. My biggest weakness would be "ambition" in all forms, polluting my mind, filling it with ridiculous thoughts I have to fight to ignore.
Your vital daily ritual:
Clean the open area with borax - peel back the top layer of dried blood and skin - insert tongs - remove rotten husk and place it in a minty fresh jar. Hold up to light.
Guilty pleasure:
Inner Circle theme from "Cops" played on bass at every sound check - just the first part mind you - over and over - I really do this. And I love it.
If I wasn't playing music I would be:
Dead.
Your most memorable day job:
Floral delivery man on Valentine's Day. Sometimes I think I did that job just to be able to recall it... the endless variety of reactions.
Best/worst advice received:
Worst - "You think this is bad now - it only gets worse"
Best - "Don't change what you are." "You guys need to fuck up more"
I would drop everything to play a benefit for:
Home of the Innocents shelter in Louisville.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
When it rains I put on my jacket - no umbrella - rhythmic travel exploring - when it's done ... exhale into dark -
What personal trait would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed? And have you?
Pass. No.
When I think of Canada I think:
Glenn Gould, CBC Brave New Waves, Michael Ondaatje (who lives and works in Toronto, I believe), Wendigos (giant werewolf-like beast), "Strange Brew", Vast beauty, better health care system.
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
Pass.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
I once met the author and artist Frank Miller (of "Daredevil," "Ronin" and "The Dark Knight Returns" fame ) but it wasn't strange - it was amazing. I think he's a great talent. My mom once shared a plane ride with Vincent Price(!). He's the best.
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
Illustrating Clive Barker novels.
