Coming off of their set in Denver over the weekend, punk legends the Misfits have hinted that they want to keep the reunion going, and possibly make their first collection of new material since the early '80s.
As previously reported, last Sunday's (August 4) performance at the Denver Riot Fest marked the first time founding members Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only stepped onstage together since 1983. The performance also reunited them with longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, and added former Slayer skinsman Dave Lombardo on drums. Apparently, the night was a triumph for the band, with Only now saying he hopes to extend the good and ghoulish vibes past their other Riot Fest commitment in Chicago this month.
"I want it to continue. I know Doyle wants it to continue. I know Glenn wants it to continue. We just have to be big enough people to make it continue," the bassist told Rolling Stone. "And that's where we're at. Whatever it takes. We're going into our 40th anniversary so the timing couldn't be more perfect."
While it would seem as if, at the very least, more shows are in the cards for Fiend Club members that couldn't make it out to the Riot Fest shows, Only also suggested that the reunited group of ghouls focus their energies on making some new Misfits tunes.
"Why don't we work together and make the greatest album ever?" he said. "Now we've got different elements. We've got Doyle playing more of a metal kind of thing. We've got Dave, who we're trying to figure out what the fuck he's doing. And Glenn's got his own thing. And Acey [Slade, second guitar] fills in good too. And I've got the band where it is today. So it's a matter of remolding and using all the different elements that I've got."
When asked if a conversation had been had with Danzig about making a new record, Only clarified: "I think it's got to evolve naturally. The thing is we've tried to plan things and then we stand there and wait and as it comes we'll just do it. When we go back – I don't know about Glenn – but I canceled our touring and everything for this so I'm going to go home and write and lift."
For the time being, the "original" Misfits have one more reunion show planned, which takes place September 18 as part of Riot Fest Chicago.
Outside of the reunion, Only maintains a different lineup of the Misifits, Danzig and Doyle perform in their respective eponymous projects, and Lombardo plays drums in metal/hardcore crossover project Dead Cross.
