Jessie Reyez has been awarded this year's Prism Prize for the music video for her song "Far Away."
After deliberation by over 120 Canadian jurors, the Peter Huang-directed video took this year's trophy and a grand prize of $20,000.
"Music videos offer the unique opportunity to add depth and meaning to a song for an unforgiving look at the world at large," Louis Calabro, VP of programming and awards, said in a statement. "We could not be more honoured to crown Peter Huang's 'Far Away' the 2020 Prism Prize Grand Prize winner, a video that is an unfortunate representation of reality for many people."
In addition to Huang and Reyez's win, the fan-voted Audience Award has been awarded to Keavan Yazdani and Sean Brown for their work on the video for Daniel Caesar's "CYANIDE REMIX" featuring Koffee.
Other honours include the Hi-Fidelity Award (given to recording artists who "utilize music videos in innovative ways"), which was given to Daniela Andrade; the Lipsett Award, which was awarded to creative filmmaking production house Tranquillo for their unique approach to music video art; and the Special Achievement Award (awarded in recognition of exceptional contributions to music video are on the world stage), which went to Bardia Zeinali.
Finally, the inaugural Willie Dunn Award was given to LauraAnn Gibson. As a recipient, she was asked to select an emerging filmmaker to award a $5,000 cash prize. Gibson selected Scarborough-based director Noor Khan as the recipient.
All Prism Prize Award winners, including the Grand Prize, Audience Award and the others listed above, will also receive equipment rental grants in the amount of $2,500, courtesy of William F. White International Inc.
The 2020 finalists — consisting of 20 artists announced back in February, including Orville Peck, Cartel Madras, PUP and more — will also receive a $500 cash prize from Slaight Music and RBCxMusic.
