To many, Joanna Newsom is best known as the girlfriend of SNL/Lonely Island star Andy Samberg. For others, she is a fashion icon, appearing on style blogs and in the pages of W.
There are still some, however, who remember Newsom as the oddball folkie behind the quirky masterpieces Ys and The Milk-Eyed Mender, which topped critics' lists earlier this decade. These music fans will be relieved to learn that Newsom may have completed work on a new album.
First, Vogue revealed this tidbit while reporting on the opening of a new designer clothing store in Tokyo, writing, "Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon held court by the deejay booth while Joanna Newsom (in town recording her new album) chatted with her boyfriend, SNL's Andy Samberg."
Then, as TwentyFourBit points out, W recently put this little gem in a photo caption of Newsom: "She recently finished work on a new album."
The album will be Newsom's first since 2006. As for why she was supposedly recording in Tokyo, that may be because the city is also the home of Ys collaborator Jim O'Rourke.
And while this still isn't a lot to go on, Newsom did recently announced an Australian tour, making a 2010 release look a bit more likely.
