Fans of six-string madness, six-minute rock jams and smoking tons of weed, your wildest fantasies just came true: ex-Red Hot Chili Pepper guitarist John Frusciante and the Mars Volta's Omar Rodríguez-López have released a new collaborative album.
The all-instrumental seven-song release, Omar Rodríguez López & John Frusciante, is now available here. It was posted as a free download on Friday (April 30), but people can also donate to get the tunes, with proceeds going to "Keep Music in Schools" programs. The release, which contains the duo's previous collaboration, 2005's 0=2 single, will also be available on vinyl and CD sometime this year, although a release date is not set.
Frusciante - who has kept busy with his solo material and playing with his girlfriend's band, Swahili Blonde, since he announced in December 2009 he was leaving the Chili Peppers - will be collaborating on a second release with Rodríguez-López this year. That one will feature Juan Alderete, who plays bass in Rodríguez-López's day job, and fellow Voltian and Omar's younger brother, Marcel Rodríguez-López, who plays synths and percussion for that band, according to Frusciante's Wikipedia page.
The pair's creative partnership doesn't stop there: Frusciante has played with the Mars Volta in the past and is also the executive producer of Rodríguez-López's yet-to-be-released film The Sentimental Engine Slayer. Rodríguez-López has played on some of Frusciante's solo albums and guested on the Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium.
