John Morales

The M&M Mixes

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Jan 18, 2010

An accomplished '80s producer who's worked with artists from Aretha Franklin to Billy Ocean, John Morales was responsible for the club versions of classic tracks such as "Axel F" and "The Rhythm of the Night" (by DeBarge). M&M Productions formed from Morales's partnership with Sergio Munzibai and the two could have been dubbed "the remix kings," holding over 650 mixes under their belts throughout their careers in the decade of the synth. The M&M Mixes comes out in a timely manner, as the current hoopla surrounding post-disco music reaches a clean crescendo. The compilation presents a combination of previously unreleased NYC underground disco and noted Salsoul Records artists (such as Skyy and Inner Life). The sounds on the record illuminate a solid bridge between erroneous popular music and killer underground shit emphasizing synthesizers and touching vocals. There is a whack of history here that, cut up and sampled, makes the music of today.
