Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash: The Man, His World, His Music

BY James KeastPublished Jun 1, 2005

This rare 1969 documentary plays more like a Super-8 home movie, and therein lies its charm. Just one year into his marriage to June Carter, the "man in black" tours through the Southern states playing for inmates and Native Americans, duetting with Bob Dylan and Carl Perkins, and reminiscing about his cotton-picking childhood. Musical performances dominate this rarely seen feature, but the home movie footage (June casually brushes dandruff from him during an interview) reveals Cash to be a humble and thankful man of deep conviction.
