Jon Hopkins Talks His Evolving Live Show, Streams 'Immunity' on Exclaim.ca

Come June 4, electronic innovator Jon Hopkins will release a new studio full-length, Immunity. The producer has worked on past collaborations with artists as diverse as Coldplay and Brian Eno, but never has the phrase "dance floor" been thrown so casually around his work. Despite the fact his latest album presents more than a fair share of his emotional brand of downtempo, many fans are focused on how it will translate onstage. But as Hopkins points out, he'll be bringing something extra to his live set-up.

"I'll be making a conscious effort to keep the performance interactive, incorporating live elements, bring things to life a little bit," he tells Exclaim! when prodded about his upcoming performance this Friday (May 31) at Montreal's MUTEK festival. It's the producer's second appearance at the Montreal edition of the fest, but he has also performed at both the Barcelona and Mexico subsidiaries. "It's a great organization and I'm grateful to be able to continue to work with them."

Hopkins will be applying the experience he attained touring his acclaimed 2009 release Insides — an album that, in its original form, had very little to do with clubbing.

"When I started playing more and more clubs, my set evolved. I got to experience other live sets and ended up getting a lot more interested in what made things work in that environment," he explains. "I was keen to work out how to make an addictive sounding rhythm, one that propels you in a way that you don't want it to stop."

Despite a slate of shows booked right up until November, touring Immunity isn't the only thing Hopkins is looking forward to this year. He has a couple of fresh film scores under his belt, and one of those is due to land in a few months. A film called How I Live Now, directed by Kevin MacDonald, will feature something special.

"There will likely be a soundtrack album for that with a collaboration I'm not allowed to mention quite yet, but I'm pretty excited about that."

Immunity hits stores worldwide on June 4 courtesy of Domino Records, and you can currently stream the album on Exclaim.ca over here. Hopkins will be performing a special launch event on the same date at the Grasslands Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Find all his tour dates below.
