Julianna Barwick Announces 'Will,' Shares New Single, Tour Dates

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 8, 2016

Experimental sound auteur Julianna Barwick last left us with the taste of her brewery-backed Rosabi EP, but will next be giving listeners a more full-bodied release. Her third proper full-length is titled Will, and it arrives May 6 via Dead Oceans.

A press release notes that the new album is the proper follow-up to 2013's Nepenthe. While that record had been cut in Iceland, Will brings together various sessions. Songs were tracked in a house in upstate New York, Asheville, NC's Moog Factory, and in Lisbon, Portugal. Fittingly, the set is said to be "a reflection of a life lived somewhere in between transience and standing still."

"I love touring, but it can be a wild ride. You're constantly adjusting, assimilating, and finding yourself in life-changing situations," the musician said in a statement. She added of the arrangements on Will, "I knew I'd be playing these songs live, so I wanted some movement. Something that had rhythm and low-end."

Described as "ominous" and "compelling," the record is said to have a strong synth presence. In addition to Barwick, the recordings feature performances from Mas Ysa's Thomas Arsenault, Dutch cellist Maarten Vos and percussion player Jamie Ingalls (Chairlift, Tanlines).

Pre-orders for Will are up now on Barwick's website, with limited quantities coming packaged with a 7-inch of outtakes.
