So Many Days

Julie Doiron has worn many hats over the years — as a founding member of Eric's Trip, she led the Wooden Stars to a Juno and released a string of great, if somewhat under the radar, solo albums as Broken Girl, then under her own name. So Many Days is Doiron's third re-teaming with Eric's Trip alum Rick White in as many albums. While it lacks the buzzy fizz of her previous effort, I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day, it nevertheless retains White's penchant for gritty recordings, which gives these tracks a toughness no distortion pedal can create. Lyrically, Doiron sounds under siege, singing, "It's true they all love me, but I just don't feel I can make it no more." These dozen songs were written in between stints in Toronto, Montreal and Sackville, NB, suggesting a period of flux in Doiron's life. Whatever was going down, it did nothing to curb her ability to write songs like the swinging "Our Love." So Many Days is another in a string of excellent releases from this underappreciated Canadian gem.
