Julien Gregoire & Guy Pelletier

Traces

BY David LewisPublished Feb 1, 2000

Multi-instrumentalists Grégoire (percussion) and Pelletier (flutes) explore an all-instrumental duo project that ranges from a quasi-Celtic atmosphere (“Reve de Thrace”) to ostinato variations (“Ce qu'il en restat”) and percussive free-form themes (“Docteur Smith”). Reaching passionate heights as they generate bird calls in a rain forest during the inspired impressionism of "Ornithologiaque," this virtuoso French Canadian duo recreates the sounds of whales passing and ice caps melting in the atmospheric seascape ("Propos d'un glacier") with its eerie interplay between marimba and double-tracked flutes.
