Electronic music collaborations are a curious proposition. It can be difficult when producers from two differing sub-genres of electronic music come together to make a cogent sound; it's rare that it actually works. Have you heard about the new Merzbow and David Guetta collabo? No? Neither has anyone else. When done correctly though, the results can be sublime. Take the recent Jets EP from Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum, for example. Their trademark production quirks complement each other perfectly, creating a sound that's at the same time new and recognisably their own. Jupiter Jazz (the new project from deep house wunderkind Maceo Plex and the fast-rising Danny Daze) unfortunately suffers from a lack of identity. It's a great concept on paper, but their respective oeuvres are just too similar for this to be considered a fresh proposition. Barring some deft Zapp & Roger sampling on "Shake It Mama" and a killer bass line on "Technology," there really isn't much to write home about on Booty Jazz, which is a shame, as both producers are talented in their own right.
