Over the last few weeks, JUNO TV has been showcasing artists nominated for this year's Juno Awards with a series of intimate performances videos, with the latest entry focusing on folk singer Justin Rutledge.
Nominated in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year for his 2013 set Valleyheart, Rutledge tackles the record's "Kapuskasing Coffee" for the session armed with nothing but his voice and an acoustic guitar. While the artist notes in the emotional tune that "sometimes it helps to play some heavy, heavy metal," the arrangement plays out tenderly, with thumb-strummed chords supporting the slight quiver in Rutledge's voice quite nicely.
You can watch it below and see the entire session here on Thursday (March 27).
The Vault sessions have previously unveiled performance clips form the likes of Born Ruffians, Rich Kidd, the Darcys and more.
The 2014 Juno Awards take place March 30 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.
Moving on past Valleyheart, Rutledge will next issue his Tragically Hip tribute, Daredevil. The album features unique takes on old Hip tracks like "Grace Too" and "Courage," and hits stores April 22 through Outside Music.
