Kamasi Washington told us yesterday (April 9) that a new album called Heaven and Earth was on the way, and now full details for the upcoming LP have been revealed. It's due out June 22 via Young Turks.
As Washington hinted, the record is a two-parter — with Earth representing "the world that I am a part of" and Heaven representing "the world that is part of me."
Across the 16 new tracks, Washington enlisted instrumental help from his band the Next Step, as well as the West Coast Get Down, featuring performances by artists like Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Ronald Bruner, Jr., Cameron Graves, Brandon Coleman, Miles Mosley, Patrice Quinn, Tony Austin and many others.
Washington composed, wrote and arranged original music for most of the project, though it also features a new arrangement of Freddie Hubbard's "Hubtones" and a rework of the classic kung-fu movie theme "Fists of Fury." There is also one song on the record credited to bandmate Ryan Porter.
The album was recorded at Henson Studios in Los Angeles and marks the full-length follow-up to 2015's Epic. Washington also released an EP titled Harmony of Difference last year.
The multi-instrumentalist has teased the two-sided offering by releasing a song from each half of the album. Scroll past the full Heaven and Earth tracklisting to listen to "Fists of Fury" and "The Space Travelers Lullaby" below.
Washington has also mapped out a seriously intense world tour, which includes stops in Vancouver (June 24), Saskatoon (June 25), Montreal (June 30) and Toronto (November 5). You can see the entire schedule below as well.
