While Karen O is best known as the frontwoman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, she's also made a mark with some scattered solo releases in recent years, having contributed music to the films Where the Wild Things Are and Her. Now, she's ready to make her official solo debut. Crush Songs is due out on September 9 through Julian Casablancas' Cult Records.
In a handwritten statement, the 35-year-old singer explained that this material is close to a decade old. "When I was 27 I crushed a lot," she said. "I wasn't sure I'd ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours."
The songs were recorded in 2006 and 2007, and an announcement describes them as "an intimate collection of lo-fi, bedroom recordings in the vein of Karen's Oscar-nominated 'The Moon Song.'"
The album is currently available to pre-order on limited edition sunburst-coloured deluxe vinyl that comes with 15 cards of handwritten lyrics with drawings. Get it here. Soon, it will also be available to order on standard LP, CD and digital download.
