The seemingly incongruous worlds of drone music and #brunchlife collided at Wavelength's inaugural Drone Brunch yesterday, feeding unsuspecting brunchers and genre enthusiasts alike a heaping serving of tone clusters and sustain in the Gladstone's Melody Bar.
Seated on the floor at the front of the room, Kat Estacio (a member of modern kulintang ensemble Pantayo who also works at Exclaim! in layout production) opened the ceremonies with a lengthy, reverberant piece incorporating hanging and racked kulintang gongs, an Organelle synth and laptop processes.
A patient, swelling drone that soon took on an eerie, tense quality, Estacio took on the difficult task of rubbing against the casual dining vibe, quickly introducing trickling effects, and brushing a larger hanging gong.
The drone growing more intense and alien, Estacio began introducing louder tones and more swirling textures to the mix, the clanking of table dishes and the hum of conversation (brunch crowds will chat over anything) taking on a somewhat paranoid character in response. A nearby table snapped under the pressure and knocked their cream over.
