Sudbury singer-songwriter Kate Maki has announced her first new album in nine years, previewed today by new single "All I Get."
Impossible Knot arrives May 9 as the long-awaited follow-up to the artist's sixth studio LP, 2016's Head in the Sand. Co-produced by Maki and David Draves, it was recorded to tape at Little Bullhorn in Ottawa and features guest appearances from Jim Bryson, Dale Murray, Ruth Minnikin and Ryan Levecque.
"I suppose I have come full circle, teaching high school and writing songs to help deal with life-changing circumstances," Maki said of the record, having initially launched her career in 2003 with Confusion Unlimited, the success of which prompted her to leave teaching behind for a career in music. "After a long period of grief, it was a relief to be reunited with the songwriting process, and of course, reunited with Draves and his trusty tape machine."
Of the dust-kissed, twangy lead single, she added, "The lightness and joyful warmth of the music helps soften the heavy lyrical exploration as to why we let our bad habits get the better of us. This song asks tough questions, ones you want answered when you are trying to quit something or someone that no longer serves you, and struggling to accept defeat. We often destroy ourselves by holding on to things that we should be letting go of. This song is a reminder to bow out gracefully before it's too late… easier said than done."
