We already knew that Bon Iver leader Justin Vernon was co-producing his girlfriend Kathleen Edwards's new album. Now, Edwards has announced a new seven-inch single, due out September 27 through MapleMusic Recordings, which takes two songs from the sessions.
The A-side is called "Wapusk," and it's an aching ballad with guest vocals from her beau. Vernon's contribution is subtle, but you can make out his distinctive falsetto in the song's second half. What's more, the moody and atmospheric arrangement bears Vernon's stamp. You can have a listen over at Pitchfork.
This track was written when Edwards participated in the National Parks Project last year. Read her words about it here.
As for the B-side, it is called "Change the Sheets." Both tracks were laid down in Fall Creek, WI, and Toronto, ON.
Edwards and Bon Iver will be touring the world together this fall, but there are no collaborative Canadian dates. This is a shame, since advance copies of the single will be available from the merch table.
Oh, and by the looks of that new Edwards promo shot above, she's a Randy Newman fan.
UPDATE: TwentyFour Bit points out that "Change the Sheets" comes from Edwards's forthcoming LP Voyageur. Stream and download both of the new songs from Rounder.
