Perhaps Katy Perry is taking Stevie Nicks's advice to "get off the internet" a little too literally: as the prophetic "E.T." music video foretold, the pop star is being sent into space.
Perry has now been announced as part of the crew for the next rocket launch from Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin private space-travel company. New Shepard's 11th human flight, NS-31, will launch with the Blue Origin's first all-women flight team (and, as per the company, the first since Valentina's Tereshkova's 1963 solo spaceflight) — including Perry, Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez, TV host Gayle King and film producer Kerianne Flynn, as well as scientists Amanda Nguyen and Aisha Bowe.
The mission is scheduled to take place sometime this spring, although details have yet to be revealed. According to Blue Origin's press release, Sánchez is proud to lead a mission that will "challenge [the crew's] perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come."
The little bio on Perry's career included in the press release notes that the pop star "hopes her journey encourages her daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively."
This is seemingly further commitment to the so-called "slapstick" "Woman's World" bit than anyone expected, but it does beg the question: if we're so lucky to be living in it, why choose to leave? Yeah, 143 was a bad album, but nobody would probably go so far as to banish Perry from the planet for it — do we have to say she's ahead of the curve if she does it voluntarily?
