The Killers

"Runaways"

Following a moody trailer that popped up last month for the Killers' upcoming Battle Born album, the Las Vegas quartet have premiered the disc's first single "Runaways." While we pointed to a Brian Eno influence in that teaser, "Runaways" delivers the big stadium hooks we've grown accustomed to from the band.

Airy guitar drones and barroom-ballad piano melodies strike up quickly in the intro as vocalist Brandon Flowers lays out a verse about the foundations of teenage love. What follows is a Springsteenian tale of elopement and the ups and downs of family life, as the band deliver the rest of the mid-paced anthem with bombs-bursting open guitar chords, the occasional military drum roll and some blippy keyboard sequencing.

Battle Born arrives September 18 through Island.
