King Khan and the Shrines Sign with Merge for New Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 10, 2013

Since the last time King Khan released an album with his band the Shrines, the Berlin-based/Canadian-born rock'n'roller has focused on projects like Almighty Defenders, The King Khan Experience and, of course, the King Khan & BBQ Show. Now, King Khan and the Shrines are set to return with a new album through the esteemed Merge Records.

The label announced the signing today (May 10), revealing that the group's first album for Merge would arrive later this year. Tour dates will also reportedly be announced soon.

When the as-yet-untitled album arrives, it will be the first record from King Khan and the Shrines since 2007's What Is?! (not including the 2008 compilation The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines).

While we wait for details of the album will be confirmed, we'll leave you with a statement from King Khan about the new signing that includes a bizarre, Django Unchained-related promise to "show my Indian penis to the world."

Rumours have been flying about me being taped to three swans and traveling the world. Well it was a rough ride but someone had to do it. After being called the "Beetlejuice of rock 'n roll," i have decided to join forces with the underworld and in doing so have reached a new all time low. Hell hath no fury as a swan taped to a fat Indian man.

I have finally found my new family in Merge records and as always I would much rather work with southern folk than city slickers (fuck Bill Crystal and his plastic face). It is a pleasure working with folks who eat ribs while they cure buffalo meat and sell rekkids. If I get a fair shot on the plantation of Merge maybe i will save Brunhilda and show my Indian penis to the world. Tell Quentin Tarantino that he should have let DiCaprio show the world his junk too to make the movie balanced . . .
