King Tuff

'King Tuff' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 22, 2012

First things first: let's all take a moment to appreciate the insane and awesome album cover for King Tuff's self-titled sophomore album, which shows a monstrous bat clutching a guitar and a fairy wand against a bright reddish-orange background. You'll have a chance to get your hands on this wild-looking package when it's released next Tuesday (May 29) via Sub Pop, but until then, stream the whole record right here on Exclaim.ca.

The band features Kyle Thomas of Happy Birthday, another poppy rock outfit signed to Sub Pop. As for his work with King Tuff, the new album doles out the hooks in the form of psych-tinged bubblegum garage rock and the occasional stripped-down acoustic track. These tunes are delivered with an equal blend of muscle and fragility.

The songs were laid down in a Detroit-area recording studio, and Thomas previously said that he was aiming to make a "full-on rock album." Did he succeed? Judge for yourself by streaming the record below.

UPDATE: This stream was available for one week only and is no longer available.
