Considering that the Kinks broke up in 1996, it's been a surprisingly news-filled year for the British pop icons. In addition to dropping hints about a new album and a star-studded retread of past hits, the band released a new documentary and mourned the passing of founding bassist Pete Quaife. Now, the London legends are back in the news once more, as actor/comedian/director Bobcat Goldthwait has announced that his new project will be a big screen musical adaptation of the Kinks' 1976 concept album Schoolboys in Disgrace.
The album is a coming-of-age story about a young troublemaker who becomes disenchanted with the system and goes on to become the evil capitalist Mr. Flash (featured on the albums Preservation: Act 1 and Preservation: Act 2). The Playlist reports that Ray Davies has given the project his blessing and has even signed on as an executive producer.
In a press release [via The Hollywood Reporter], Goldthwait said, "It's the genesis story of a super villain set to music. It's the story of the world's most charming criminal and a realistic high school musical for all the kids who hate sugary, sweet, unrealistic high school musicals." We're guessing this means he isn't a fan of Zac Efron.
Goldthwait wrote the script for the film himself. The Kinks' original songs will later be re-recorded by the cast and released as a soundtrack. Let's hope that they use the album's original cover art (see above) as the movie poster.
The Playlist also reports that even more Kinks-related movies are on the way. Head over to Ain't It Cool to read about Do It Again, a fan-made documentary about trying to reunite to the famously feuding Davies brothers. What's more, director Julien Temple (The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, The Filth and the Fury) is reportedly working on a biopic about the band.
