Kinky

While recording Reina in Southern California, Kinky’s recording studio was hit by a mudslide that rolled studio contents — drums, guitars and recording equipment into a mud-clung heap. What was dug out, cleaned off and remixed is the genre-chewing electro Latin pop of the band’s third release, Reina. Opening with the staccato norteño accordion in "Sister Twisted,” the album quickly jumps into the punked-out, electro grind that gives Kinky their indie-tronic flavour. Imagine a jam between Talking Heads and the B-52’s in Tijuana. Energetic grooves and cross genre pop melds make for a light-hearted rock-out; where rubbery bass lines, chunky guitar and kitschy synth serve up a healthy dose of crunchy electro pop, all soaked in Latin overtones, and buoyed with a tongue-in-cheek musicality purely directed at the dance floor.
