It's been quite some time since we've heard from Toronto-based rapper K'naan, so news of more work from the artist is more than welcomed. As it turns out, though, the next project from the "Wavin' Flag" writer won't be delivered from behind a microphone, but in front of a camera. K'naan has just signed on to star in the new movie The Catastrophist.
Variety reports that the musician will show up on screen beside actors Steve Coogan and Stephen Dorff in British director Nick Broomfield's (Kurt & Courtney, Biggie and Tupac) adaptation of Ronan Bennett's 1998 novel of the same name. It's unclear what role K'naan will take on, but the book details the troubled relationship between a novelist and a journalist during the decolonization of Belgian Congo in the 1960s.
The film will be shot in Mwanza, Tanzania because it's perceived to be too dangerous to shoot in neighbouring Congo. This is notable, as it will be the first foreign feature filmed in Tanzania since the 1962 John Wayne vehicle, Hatari!
A release date has yet to be set, but the film will be produced by Broomfield's Lafayette Films, Paul Miller of Escape Pictures and the UK's Channel 4 with line producer Donall McCusker. eOne will distribute the pic internationally.
