KT Tunstall

This 29-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter is something of a late bloomer, given that this is her debut album. It has been warmly embraced by the British music press and does reveal a songstress of potential. It is certainly a diverse collection of songs, ranging from the well-crafted and catchy pop rock of "Another Place to Fall” through to soulful ballads and bluesy tracks. Comparison points range from Dido to Joss Stone (for whom KT has opened). The production work of Steve Osborne (U2, New Order) is polished, occasionally too much so, as a tune like "Silent Sea” shows that less can be more. The closing cut, "Through the Dark,” is a lovely piano and voice-driven ballad that perhaps best showcases the warmth of her voice; it would be nice to see her explore this direction next time out. In the meantime, Eye to the Telescope stands as an appealing choice when you are seeking a musical sip of Earl Grey tea as opposed to a slug of moonshine.
