After a whirlwind day of maneuvering through sweaty crowds with pervasive, thumping electro beats from the Island stage serving as the day's bass line, Kurt Vile and the Violators' hour-long evening set acted as a balm; as a smooth, reliable shot of whiskey to ease the soul as the sun began to set.
Opening with "Loading Zones" off their latest release, Bottle It In, with Vile and company yelling "I park for free" to the small, yet fervent crowd, the band then moved into "Jesus Fever," with Vile announcing, in a cheeky, matter-of-fact way that "I'm just going to do pretty much whatever I want up here."
Standing wide-stance with his trademark long, curly hair shrouding his face, Vile took the audience through his discography with "Bassackwards," "I'm An Outlaw," "Wakin' On a Pretty Day" "Pretty Pimpin" and "Heart Attack," off of 2009's Childish Prodigy — his renowned, varied guitar solos centering each track in the here and now.
Ending with "Wild Imagination" and a few thank-yous to all the "beautiful people here tonight," Vile and his accomplices left the stage, leaving behind a feeling of comfort as the crowd dispersed into the night.
