Since relocating from Vancouver to Toronto, Kristen Cudmore-led folk fusion project Language Arts announced that they had an album called Wonderkind on the way. Cudmore has now inked a record deal to facilitate the release of the new LP, having signed with MapleMusic Recordings.
The album will be out in February. According to a press release, it draws on sonic touchstones like Beck, Stereolab and Laura Nyro, and blends "indie-pop, '90s female-fronted rap, and prog-rock elements." It was apparently inspired by the songwriter's move to Toronto, along with feelings of confusion and heartbreak, plus the loss of two close friends.
The album was recorded with Darryl Neudorf (Neko Case, Blue Rodeo) and features a number of guests including JP Carter (Destroyer, Dan Mangan), Randy Lee (formerly of the Bicycles) and Neil MacIntosh (of Ashley MacIsaac's band).
