Le Peuple de L'Herbe

Sold Out

BY Melissa WheelerPublished Jan 1, 2006

On their last release, the four-man group from France, Le Peuple De L’Herbe offered up tangy drum & bass, solidly demonstrating they were damn good at mixing classic d&b with funk, break beats, rap and dub. With this new nine-track and two-video EP Sold Out, they restate their position as those who hold down good, wholesome drum & bass with a few more breaks, a bit more funk, a bit more dub, and a few more rhymes. You can look forward to luscious live versions of "Les Rues De St. Paul, P.H. Theme” (for which there is a creative stop-motion video) and Agoria’s relaxing remix of "Mr. Nice.” Guest rapper (and former Guinness Records’ fastest rapper in the world) JC 001 appears on more than half the tracks, making him feel more like a member than an extra. It’s impressive that they’re so tight on stage and able to convey that in a recording, as well as the impressive cohesiveness of the handful of studio tracks on the EP. It’s a hearty and refreshing release from such a sturdy group, and if you haven’t experienced them yet this is an excellent place to start.
