Winnipeg duo Leaf Rapids feature Keri and Devin Latimer of alt-country act Nathan, and their latest record Citizen Alien is due out next month. Ahead of the album's arrival, though, Leaf Rapids have shared a new video for "Virginia."
The new songs hear the pair exploring Keri's family history, a collection of tales they delved into after learning that her soft-spoken great-grandmother once stabbed a man with barbershop shears.
Not all the stories they tell are quite so eventful, though many families will be able to relate to journeys overseas and the struggle of starting a new life in a foreign land. There are moments of dark history, but ultimately the record aims to celebrate the hope and wisdom of their ancestors.
That comes through on "Virginia," and you can watch the song's accompanying vintage, sepia-toned video down below.
"This song is inspired by mothers," Keri tells Exclaim! "Struggling to hang on and let go at the same time. Trying to teach our children to be strong, while dealing with our own weaknesses. Trying to encourage independence while clutching onto them for dear life. It's also about recycling paper bags."
Citizen Alien is due out May 3 via Coax Records. It follows 2015's Lucky Stars.
