The booze-fuelled, sweat-soaked, rock'n'roll highlight of FME's Friday night was Montreal's Les Deuxluxes, who also happened to have released a brand new full-length, Springtime Devil, the same day (September 2).
After taking the stage 40 minutes late with a taxidermy raccoon corpse, they kicked off a breakneck set of classic blues rock riff jams with the lead track from that record, "Queen Of Them All," after which frontdemon and lead wailer Anna Frances Meyer set forth the goal of their remaining hour: "Let's have some fun!"
It's tough to avoid fun with a band like Les Deuxluxes. Besides their epically vivid visual aesthetic — Meyer in a one-piece rainbow striped jumpsuit, and the duo's other half, Étienne Barry, decked out in sparkling sequins — the band radiates simple, delirious fun, relying on meaty guitar hooks and no-frills drums (kick and snare played by Barry's two feet) to rock the room.
It works, and it works well. Following a short break after the end of their main set, Barry and Meyer returned to do a blistering version of Johnny Cash and June Carter's "Long-Legged Guitar Pickin' Man," Meyer's growl just as irresistible as the legendary country singers'. And almost as mean.
