As we previously reported, on April 7, Merge Records will be releasing quite the treat with its SCORE! comp. A full-on collection of covers, the set includes Broken Social Scene taking on the Clean, Bright Eyes doing Magnetic Fields, Times New Viking fuzzing up Arcade Fire, and a few bands trying on Superchunk's catalogue for size. Ryan Adams, the Hive Dwellers and Death Cab For Cutie all put their spin on tunes by the peeps who run Merge, but the first one to be made public is by the mighty Les Savy Fav.
Originally featured on Superchunk's seminal third album, On the Mouth, lead-off track "Precision Auto" was a blood-rusher that waited for nobody. A more perfect 'Chunk song for the fervent dudes in Les Savy Fav, I couldn't imagine. While it's tough to say the New Yorkers put their own spin on the song, they jack it up with the same intensity and urgency that its songwriters did way back in 1993, and in doing so, make me feel like I'm 15 again.
