The last couple of months have had genre-jumping trio Liars teasing a a new LP, but now the details behind their seventh full-length have arrived in full. The band's Mess drops in North America March 25 through Mute and a day earlier overseas.
The follow-up to 2012's WIXIW is described as "the sound of a band in an ambiguous, fragile in-between state" and is apparently tailored as a "primal burst of ritualistic electronics." Frontman Angus Andrew produced the 11-song effort, which was recorded at their studio in Los Angeles, while mixing duties were handled by Timothy "Q" Wiles (VCMG).
According to Andrew, the LP once again has the outfit switching gears from their last recorded experience, referring to the Mess sessions as "way more instinctual, fun and confident" than on WIXIW.
"We are a reactionary, or maybe a better word is schizophrenic band. We go from one extreme to the other," he said in a statement. "Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid, and that's fine, but it just meant that when work started on this one, it was the exact opposite."
Songs from the set had apparently premiered live last year at New York's Museum of Modern Art. You can stream the high-tension, drum machine-driven Krautrock stomp "Mess on a Mission" in the player beneath the tracklisting, where you'll also find info on a couple of upcoming live dates.
