Little Simz has been awarded the Mercury Prize for her 2021 album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.

Following the postponement of the ceremony due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September, the annual awards recognizing the year's best British album took place last night (October 19) at London's Eventim Apollo.

Little Simz's masterful fourth record, which Exclaim! named the best of 2021, beat out albums from Wet Leg, Self Esteem, Harry Styles, Yard Act, Sam Fender, Nova Twins, Gwenno, Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler, Kojey Radical, Joy Crookes and Fergus McCreadie. The winner thanked her fellow nominees in her acceptance speech, saying, "We all made incredible albums. We all change people's lives with our music."

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was produced by the artist's childhood friend and longtime collaborator Inflo — who also produced Michael Kiwanuka's Kiwanuka, which won the 2020 Mercury Prize. The 2021 award went to Arlo Parks for Collapsed in Sunbeams.

Struggling in the new unsustainable pandemic-era touring game, both Parks and Little Simz have had to cancel treks this year due to mental health concerns, as well as financial stress.
