Way back in 1980, Loretta Lynn's life was chronicled in the Sissy Spacek-starring film Coal Miner's Daughter. Now, the country legend's life has inspired a Broadway musical, and she has picked a new singer/actress to portray her: indie darling Zooey Deschanel.
This news comes from the official Broadway website, which notes that Deschanel appeared alongside Lynn at a concert last night (May 10) in Nashville, where the pair duetted on "Coal Miner's Daughter."
Lynn said in a statement, "It's a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I'd see Coal Miner's Daughter on a movie screen, and now I can't believe it's going to be on a stage for people to see. I'm going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great -- she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same colour eyes!"
Deschanel added, "Loretta Lynn and her music have been inspirations for me for as long as I can remember. She is a true legend and to be chosen to play such an iconic woman is a dream come true."
The Broadway version of Coal Miner's Daughter will be based on Lynn's 1976 memoir of the same name, in addition to the subsequent film.
There's no other news about the forthcoming musical, and details like dates, creative team and supporting stars are still up in the air. Now that the makers have roped in an A-lister to play the lead, however, it's only a matter of time before the rest falls into place.
