Metalheads around the globe were bummed when the wee wizard, Ronnie James Dio, recently died at 67. As Dio's public memorial proved, the man was loved. And it's not just the 1,200 longhairs that came out to celebrate his life that want the man's legacy to live on - the city of Los Angeles does too, as it has declared that May 30 is now Ronnie James Dio Day.

The announcement was made at Dio's memorial on Sunday (May 30) by metal celeb/event MC Eddie Trunk, host of VH1 Classic's That Metal Show. Trunk brought the good news from the Los Angeles City Council to the metal masses, who responded with "rabid cheers and a strong showing of devil horns," reports L.A. Weekly. Coun. Paul Koretz wrote the statement, which you can see footage of Trunk reading at Dio's memorial below.

Ronnie James Dio Day? We're stoked. It's only suitable that a man as notoriously generous, giving and down to earth as Dio should get a day named in his honour. He is, after all, the guy who often thoughtfully summarized a song's lyrical themes in the final 30 seconds of the track, which was extremely helpful for those too busy rocking out to pay attention to his always righteous lyrics. Yes, in the world of metal, there was none nicer than Dio, and Ronnie James Dio Day will serve as a reminder that Dio's legions will keep those strong showings of devil horns coming for years to come.

Plus, admit it: "Ronnie James Dio Day" just sounds fucking awesome.
