Back in 2010, North Carolina folk collective Lost in the Trees delivered their debut disc All Alone in an Empty House, which we heralded for its "pop rock immediacy and chamber folk intricacy." The ensemble is set to return this spring with their sophomore LP, A Church That Fits Our Needs.
As explained in a press release, the album, which Anti- releases March 20, comes from an especially personal place, with much of the song set taking shape after the suicide of band leader Ari Picker's mother in 2009. Composed as a musical tribute to his parent, the composer wrote the LP by a desk on which a picture of his mother stood. The image, which you can see above, now acts as an album cover.
"I wanted to give her a space, in the music, to be, and to become all the things she didn't get a chance to be when she was alive," Picker said in a statement.
While the nature of the piece seems somber, the press sheet alleges the record, while emotional, is at times poppy, features luscious orchestration, and never loses the "propulsive inevitability and vitality [that] great rock and roll has."
Ari Picker recorded the set in Boston, MA and the Chapel Hill, NC area, and Rob Schnapf mixed it. You can stream album track "Red" over at NPR. You can also check out an album trailer featuring sounds from the record down below.
