After bleeding a bunch of bass lines into Dinosaur Jr.'s summertime Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not release, indie rock icon Lou Barlow is ready to deliver another solo release. The shaggy songsmith's next EP is titled Apocalypse Fetish, and it lands October 28 via Joyful Noise Recordings.
The five-song mini-release follows Barlow's 2015 full-length Brace the Wave, and it was recorded at Easthampton, MA's Sonelab facility with Justin Pizzoferrato. Barlow explained in a statement that the EP began to take shape while he was playing ukulele in the basement of Milwaukee's Eagles Ballroom ahead of a show with Dinosaur Jr. He added that the collection arrives in a year where "conspiracy theorists became experts and anger went [even more] mainstream."
"The song 'Apocalypse Fetish' proposes that, perhaps, many of us have been disappointed that the end of the world has taken too long to come after we've spent most of our lives predicting it," he said, adding, "And, perhaps, we've decided to take matters in our own hands and 'bring it on' because, if it doesn't come soon, then didn't we all seem foolish talking about it all. the. time."
Though performed on a ukulele, Barlow's use of heavier strings and a lower tuning than a standard version of the instrument has him concluding that Apocalypse Fetish was made with a "4-string acoustic guitar" and "the strumming styles and lower toned soundscapes I've been pursuing since my first released ukulele recording: 'Poledo.'"
