Louise Burns

'The Midnight Mass' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 2, 2013

We've been hotly anticipating the sophomore album from Louise Burns ever since the songwriter revealed that she had teamed up with producers Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, A.C. Newman, Dan Mangan) and Sune Rose Wagner (the Raveonettes) during the sessions. Now, The Midnight Mass is available to stream at Exclaim.ca ahead of its July 9 release via Light Organ Records.

Following the classic pop sound of Burns's 2011 debut, Mellow Drama, this album finds her moving in a dark new direction that evokes late '70s and early '80s acts like the Cure, New Order and Berlin-era David Bowie. The synth-heavy arrangements, meanwhile, recall her work as a member of Vancouver's Gold & Youth.

Contributors to the album include Cat Power's Gregg Foreman on guitar, Ladyhawk's Darcy Hancock on guitar, Dum Dum Girls' Sandy (a.k.a. Sandra Vu) on drums, Brasstronaut's Brennan Saul on drums, Sun Wizard's James Younger on guitar, and Fond of Tigers' Jesse Zubot on violin.
