Low, or to be more accurate Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, the married Mormon couple at the heart of the band, have always been very private people about their religion and personal life. I don’t know what director David Kleijwegt said to them but they completely let him into their wonderfully banal home life in Duluth, Minnesota and the juxtaposition that Kleijwegt weaves between that and their transcendent, gorgeously measured musical life is deftly done. With Sparhawk speaking openly about his faith — he’s a devout Mormon — and a little less openly about his mental crisis a while back, Kleijwegt uncovers a facet of the band that other films have not. It also helps that the cinematography is beautiful and the use of Low’s own music to reinforce certain themes is quite perfect. Just like Low, Murderer builds its message slow and steady, making this quietly stunning for Low beginners and absolutely essential for Low fans.
