Lucinda Williams Preps 'The Ghosts of Highway 20'

Just over a year after issuing the 20-song Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone, Americana favourite Lucinda Williams has announced she's set to deliver another bunch of tunes to the masses. Her The Ghosts of Highway 20 will haunt your speakers by February 5.

Rolling Stone reports that Williams is wrapping up the sessions behind the album, which will be her 12th full-length release. Apparently, the song cycle is inspired by the I-20, a stretch of highway that cuts across the Southern U.S., including Williams' home state of Louisiana. Though song details have yet to arrive in full, the album is said to take place across this landscape and is filled with characters that travel or traffic near the I-20.

In addition to 12 original tracks, The Ghosts of Highway 20 also features a cover of Bruce Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town track "Factory." An update of Woodie Guthrie's "House of Earth" is also included and will feature lyrics from the folk figure and a new melody from Williams.

Williams is accompanied on much of the album by pedal steel player Greg Leis, who also co-produced the album with Williams and Tom Overby. Other musicians tapped for performances include guitarists Bill Frisell and Val McCallum, drummer Butch Norton and bassist David Sutton.
