The last we heard from beloved French synth-gazers M83, they were hard at work on the soundtrack to the film Black Heaven. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, however, M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez called the Black Heaven a "shitty soundtrack" for a "shitty movie." Fortunately, things are looking up with the proper follow-up to 2008's Saturdays = Youth finally on the way.
In the same interview, Gonzalez described the new album as his most focused effort to date. "It's silly to say, but I feel like this is going to be my best album -- my most complete album," he said. "I'm turning 30 in December and I feel like I finally know what I'm doing. I'm a bit scared because Saturdays was a bit bright, and maybe people are expecting me to go even brighter on this. But I'm going darker."
As for the sound of the record, Gonzalez explained that it will be more expansive in every way. "For now, the direction of the album is very, very, very epic," he said. "Very orchestrated. I feel like it's a mix of all my albums, actually. I'm singing much more on this album too, and I'm very happy with my voice right now. We have like 22 tracks right now."
The album features contributions from frequent collaborator Morgan Kibby and bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who has played with Beck and Nine Inch Nails. No other information is available just yet, but the album is expected in spring 2011.
