Anthony Gonzales (better known for creating the electronic/shoegaze/'80s new wave pop of M83) has taken his ethereal sounds to new places entirely: the big screen. It's been revealed that Gonzales recently put his musical skills to work composing the score to director Gilles Marchand's latest film, Black Heaven.
The out-of-competition Cannes film is about an online game and stars Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet (La Belle Personne), Louise Bourgoin (The Girl from Monaco), Melvil Poupaud (A Christmas Tale) and Pauline Etienne (Silent Voice). And, right, it's about an online game, but bear with us; it actually sounds pretty good.
The movie goes a little something like this: Gaspard (Leprince-Ringuet) and Marion (Etienne) are a couple spending a romantic summer in France. Along comes Audrey (Bourgoin), who spends a lot of time playing Black Hole, an online game. She meets people online and convinces them to kill themselves in real life. As Gaspard gets sucked into this, further twists and turns await. Along with, no doubt, a cool soundtrack.
This is Marchand's second shot at directing; his first was 2003's Who Killed Bambi?.
M83's last album was 2008's Saturdays = Youth, but subsequent tours supporting the Killers, Kings of Leon and Depeche Mode have kept Gonzales's name out there since.
You can get more info on Black Heaven on the Cannes site, but unfortunately, there's no word yet on whether Gonzales will be releasing a proper soundtrack of the score.
