M83's Anthony Gonzalez Explains the Statement Behind 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming'

BY Cam LindsayPublished Oct 18, 2011

This week, M83's epic new double album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming will be arrive. Released on double CD and double vinyl, as well as digitally, Anthony Gonzalez hopes that if you do decide to shell out some money on his music, you buy the physical product. In fact, he feels it will enhance the experience.

"I would prefer for this album to be listened to on a CD or vinyl," he tells Exclaim! "I don't like the idea of people listening to MP3s because we put so much effort into making the sound of this album valuable. If you really want to understand what this album is about you need to listen to it on vinyl or CD. Even if only a few people buy the [physical copy], it will be a personal victory for me."

Nostalgic for the glory days of collecting music, Gonzalez says that in the face of a musical revolution, part of the reason he made Hurry Up was to make a statement about how he feels music should be appreciated.

"That's what makes this album interesting," he explains. "It's true that the music industry has changed a lot and it's now about singles and downloading on iTunes. I just wanted to make a statement, and this album is a way for me to say, 'I like the way we used to listen to music.' This is what this album is all about: music lovers and how we listened to music in the '80s and '90s."

Gonzalez says a lot of the inspiration came from owning Smashing Pumpkins' double album, 1995's Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

"My main reference was the Smashing Pumpkins' double album, not just because of the music but also because of the object," he says. "When I was a teenager I fell in love with both the music and object. I would hold the CD in my hand, reading all of the lyrics while listening to the album over and over. For me, it was a discovery and I want younger generations to experience what I got from the Smashing Pumpkins double album."
