The Africa Chamber

BY Bryan WellsPublished Jan 11, 2010

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Germany and Africa couldn't be further apart musically. They are two worlds so vastly different comparisons are almost impossible, but to German electronics wiz Stephan Schneider, recreating the mystic sounds of the world's second largest continent via a medley of modern and ancient techniques has come to fruition with The Africa Chamber. Schneider subtly melds the two worlds almost as if he placed a synth and sequencer somewhere in the middle of the Congo, only to return to find creations naturally crafted and truly reflective of the region through the eyes of a distant admirer. Tracks like "Darkheart" and "The Protector" perfectly exemplify Schneider's fascination with the ritualistic storytelling custom of nomadic tribal gatherings, where complex tribal rhythms and simple yet curious melodies come to life. The Africa Chamber is a refreshing sonic adventure into a land that few will ever see, making it a worthwhile listen on a quiet evening.
