Three years after Marissa Burwell's self-titled debut EP, the folk singer-songwriter is set to follow it up with a debut album. Bittersweet is set for release on January 28, 2022, via Grind Central Records.
Burwell's debut album centres on the violent nature of the healing process. "'Bittersweet' was one of the last songs written on this record and once the song was written the album kind of named itself," she shared in a press release. "The title captures the process of making this record through a pandemic, putting salt in old wounds and then watching them heal, as well as the vulnerability that comes with sharing your step by step journey to brutal self-awareness."
Bittersweet was produced collaboratively alongside Burwell's creative partners and bandmates, including Gage McGuire, Chris Dimas and Madison Nicol. The melodic, lush soundtrack that emerged through their collaboration highlights Burwell's creative spirit and her playful nature as an artist.
The announcement follows the single "Take a Load Off," which arrived last month alongside an Andrew Parry-directed video. The track's video follows Burwell and her band performing at a saloon straight out of an old Western flick.
Burwell will celebrate the release of Bittersweet with a hometown show at the Artesian on February 5. Until then, check out the video for "Take a Load Off" below.
